Italian investments in Romania

“Italian companies’ investments in Romania are an important component of their investment flows everywhere in the world. To quote some data about the structure of Italian multinationals, we would mention those recently released by ISTAT (The Italian Statistics Institute), which emphasise how important Romania is to Italian companies doing business abroad.

Romania is first in terms of number of companies. According to the ISTAT figures, there were 3,777 companies registered in 2008, with 138,000 employees and an annual turnover of about EUR 6.9 bln. Of these, 1,657 were active in the processing industry and in constructions.

Romania’s primacy as a destination for industrial activities is also confirmed by the number of jobs created here, about 116,000, followed by Brazil (75,000) and China (66,000).

By analysing the data, one can notice that companies in the industrial sector have the following advantages from being active abroad: entering new markets and the availability of local services for customers (77.3%), logistics and distribution (53.1%) and labour force costs (42%). The annual costs of labour force for companies with Italian participation in the Romanian processing industry stood at EUR 5,200 per individual.

To examine Italian investments in Romania in detail, we must also examine the data provided by the Trade Register. On December 31, 2010, according to these figures, there were 30,147 Italian companies registered, 15,741 of which were active, with a paid social capital of about EUR 1.38 bln.

In 2010, 1,191 new companies with Italian participation were registered, accounting for about 18.9% of the total number of new companies with foreign participation in Romania.

For over ten years, Italy continues to be the main investor in terms of the number of companies registered, ranking seventh in terms of invested capital.

By analysing the Italian presence based on field of activity, the first place is taken by wholesale trade (1,801 companies), followed by real estate (1,644) and construction activities (1,246). We should also note a strong presence in the agriculture sector (1,101 companies) and retail trade (549 companies).

Data analysis reveals the important economic collaboration relationship between the two countries, strengthened by the presence of over 1.2 million Romanians in Italy. This presence of Italian companies in Romania, for over 20 years, made them incontestable protagonists in the country’s economic development and they have followed its evolution and have adjusted to its social-economic changes.

Nowadays, we can say that Italian companies have gone beyond that stage in which they transferred their production with the main goal of benefiting from the advantage of a lower labour force cost. This stage, which characterised Italian presence in the decade after the revolution, was joined by a method of internationalisation developed with the purpose of taking a stable position in Romanian economy.

This evolution is also connected to the companies, which initially moved their own production activity but over the years caught roots and became an important part of the local economic tissue. Nowadays, these companies look at the Romanian and the Eastern European market from a different perspective, they have built strong economic and affective bonds, they feel Romanian and deservedly intend to be the protagonists of Romania’s future economic development.”
